Do you feel like all you do is spend time on social media?

I bet you have a million other things you need to do for your blog, but can’t figure out how to simplify social media so you have time for more important tasks. Social media plays a huge role in promoting your blog, but it can feel complicated and overwhelming.

Most social media was not created for bloggers and business owners.

It is very beneficial for us, but it wasn’t created for us. Platforms like Facebook were created for people to connect, and be social, with one another. These platforms are now saturated with business promotion and ads, but the original intent was to allow people to engage without any barriers of time or location.


With that purpose in mind, you need to figure out how to use the platform to benefit your business as well as be favorable in the eyes of the algorithms used.


Each platform has its own algorithm which change periodically to ensure the best experience for its users. These algorithms remain secret so we can’t try and use them to our benefit.


Wouldn’t it be a bummer if you went on Facebook and all you ever saw were ads and never got to see a single friends post? This is what Facebook (and all other platforms) are trying to avoid. Makes sense right? That would totally ruin Facebook for its users.

When you use each platform with their true intentions in mind, you will get far better results from your efforts.


It is possible to promote your blog posts, products, and services in a way that will engage your audience and keep each platform happy.

Before we get started, I want to tell you something very important. You DO NOT need to be on every social media. In fact, you don’t even have to be on most of them.

Find out where your audience is and use those platforms. Start with one, get really good at it, and then add another. 

Let’s look at a couple of the big ones.


  • Pinterest is a way for people to visually search for whatever they are looking for.
  • Pinterest wants you to search for valuable content that you, and others like you, will love. This helps them show more of that kind of content to the right people.
  • Make sure to spend a little time each day pinning like a real person and not just a scheduling tool!

  • Facebook gets a lot of attention for all their algorithm changes, but the truth is they are just trying to make their platform friendly for their users and not littered with irrelevant or sponsored content.
  • People are on Facebook to see what their friends and family are up to for the most part and Facebook is trying to encourage those kinds of posts.
  • That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use Facebook as a promotion tool, but you should use it the way it was meant to be used.
  • Connect with your audience, ask them questions, share things you know they will love.
  • The most important thing is to be social.


  • Instagram is a great way to get noticed by brands and other potential partnerships, but you want to make sure you stay true to who you are and what your blog is about.
  • Instagram only works (for the most part) on mobile. The reason behind this is that Instagram wants you to share your moments in the moment.
  • You don’t have to go home and download your photos and edit them before you share them.
  • You don’t have to have a perfect looking feed.
  • What is important, very important, to Instagram is engagement.
  • Liking and commenting on other posts is what will get your profile and posts seen.

I bet you’re thinking, this is only a few of the platforms, there are so many more, and how do I possibly make social media simpler!

So, here it is. My simple social media strategy.

3 things you need to remember

  • Be social
  • Be consistent (but not crazy)
  • Be present

Don’t worry so much about scheduling out content months in advance and needing to post at 8am, 11am, 3pm, 6 pm, 8pm, and so on. Be yourself!

  • Choose a couple platforms to make your presence known.
  • Wherever your audience hangs out and you enjoy hanging out.
  • Start with one.
  • Spend 10-15 minutes commenting, sharing, engaging, or otherwise interacting in the morning, afternoon, and evening or whenever you have time.

On Facebook

  • Share a post you find that your audience will like as you scroll through your feed during each of these times.
  • I post one of my posts in the morning and sometimes in the evening and I do this straight from a spreadsheet I keep of all my posts. (Create a spreadsheet in Google docs where you keep a link to each of your blog posts and a few blurbs about each one that would be appropriate for Facebook or other social platforms.)
  • Just copy and paste the link and a quick blurb about the post into Facebook and push share.
  • If you have something to go live about, go live. Your audience will love to connect with you and Facebook gives priority to videos.

On Instagram

  • Comment on and like a few images during each of these times.
  • I post my own photos whenever I have one that fits my audience or could promote my blog in some way.
  • Some days I post one and other days 3, but I engage every day.

On Pinterest

  • Seek high quality pins that are a perfect fit for your audience.
  • Pin from the popular pins during one of these times and from your feed the other two.
  • If I am manually pinning, I will also pin about 10 of my own pins each time.
  • Total, I pin around 50 pins a day (mine plus others).
  • If Pinterest is taking up too much time, I use and LOVE Tailwind. It is an excellent way to schedule your pins as well as get an insight into what is working and not working.

I also use Google+ and Stumble Upon when I have time. I will share one of my posts to in the am and one in the pm and just browse for a couple minutes each time. These platforms seem to be a good source of traffic when I put my energy into using them and you can use the same blurbs you use for Facebook which makes it super simple to add to your sharing schedule.

I personally don’t do much on the other social media platforms, but you should figure out what works best for you. The main thing is to be a real person on social media and don’t worry so much about sharing a certain amount of content at certain times each day. You don’t have time to spend your life on social media. I find 10-15 minutes, 3 times per day is plenty for sharing and, more importantly, engaging.

The thing to be careful of is getting lost in your feeds. It is so easy to get caught up in scrolling through all the other posts you see. Pretty soon you have spent an hour and haven’t even accomplished your goal yet.

Set a timer for 15 minutes and work through each platform you use, doing only the tasks you need to do for your business. You will be surprised how much you can get done in these short spurts of time if you stay focused. Resist the urge to look at the notifications or pull up friends accounts. Save this kind of activity for another time, when you aren’t trying to get work done.
